Sea Scout Ship Wins Top Honors for Second Straight Year

Over the weekend of April 15, 16, and 17, eleven Sea Scout units from Oregon and the Puget Sound area gathered at Camp Rilea Armed Forces Training Center at Warrenton, Oregon to compete in the annual Nor’Wester Sea Scout Regatta. Last year the regatta was held at Fort Flagler State Park near Port Townsend, WA. There were 125 people attending the regatta this year.

The Sea Scouts units from Portland were: CITY OF ROSES, SUNSAIL, VOYAGEUR, DEJAVU, DRAGON. The SEA WOLF from Eugene was also present.

The participants from the Puget Sound area were: KELCEMA, Edmonds; PROPELLER and ARGO of Seattle, R.E. GILLISPIE, Olympia, FALCON, Port Townsend.

There was a total of 25 events. Competition was held in the following events:

* Flotilla drill (four person crew and coxswain maneuver a 20 boat under oars alone)
* Knot tying
* Splicing and whipping of rope
* Close order drill
* Throwing the ring buoy
* Uniform inspection
* Boatswain’s chair (hoisting a crew man aloft)
* Flashing light signaling
* Semaphore signaling
* Breeches buoy (An old-fashioned surf rescue method)
* Compass and relative bearings
* First aid
* Piloting and chart work
* Casting the heaving line
* Sail making (hand-sewn canvas work samples)
* Scuttlebutt hoist (A rigging demonstration where a 55 gallon barrel full of water has to lifted 3’ off the ground)
* Taking our a line (A rowing–line handling drill in a small boat)
* Sailing quiz
* General quiz
* Tug of War
* Safety

Awards for participation as given in “classes” named after rigs of sailing ships. The larger the rig, the more prestigious the award. From lowest to highest, the awards are named: catboat, sloop, schooner, and clipper.

Months of training and hard work paid off for the Sea Scout Ship CITY OF ROSES, of Portland, OR. Sea Scout Ship CITY OF ROSES was the overwhelming winner of this regatta. CITY OF ROSES competed in 22 of the 25 events. Of the 22 events entered by CITY OF ROSES, the unit won 14 first places, 4-second places, and 1 third place, 2 forth places, and 1 fifth place.

The crew of CITY OF ROSES is composed of freshman through junior in high school. The school represented are Camas High School, Sunset, Gresham, and Benson High Schools. Sea Scout Ship CITY OF ROSES is proudly sponsored by the Fleet Reserve Association, City of Roses Branch 55, Portland, OR.

CITY OF ROSES received the “Top Rate Clipper Class” award for excellence. This is the highest award possible at this regatta. The CITY OF ROSES was also the overall winner of the regatta and received the Nor’Wester Regatta Trophy for their superior training , knowledge, and outstanding competitive performance. This is the second consecutive year that CITY OF ROSES has won the Nor’Wester Regatta Trophy. In the 20-year history of the Nor’Wester Area Regatta Trophy, CITY OF ROSES has won it nine times; more than any other Sea Scout unit. While the trophy has only been in existence for 20 years, the Nor’Wester Sea Scout Regatta has been held continuously since 1957. In those 48 years, CITY OF ROSES has been rated CLIPPER in well over half of the regattas; Again more than any other unit.

Of the Portland units attending the regatta, SUNSAIL received the next highest rating with the “Clipper” award. VOYAGEUR, DEJAVU, and DOLPHIN TOO, received the “Schooner Class” award. The DRAGON was rated “Sloop Class”.

The SEA WOLF of Eugene received the Sloop Class” award.

Now all these Sea Scout units are preparing for summer boating/cruising activities. One hundred new members are actively being sought. Both young men and women that are graduating from the eighth grade this spring, through high school age are eligible for membership now.
