Boy Scouts were in Lincoln (NE) this morning, to let state officials know the Scout organization is active and making a difference in communities across Nebraska. Three Boy Scout councils operate in the state of Nebraska, and representatives from two of the councils – Mid-America Council in Omaha and Cornhusker Council in Lincoln (Overland Trails in Grand Island was unable to send representatives) – provided a report to Nebraska Lt. Governor Rick Sheehy, Assistant Secretary of State Dick Kohel and Area Director for the Boy Scouts of America’s Central Region Bill Fisher (from Overland Park, KS) on Scout membership numbers, community service hours provided by Scouts and other Scouting success stories.
Pictured is the delegation of Boy Scouts and leaders representing the Mid-America Council, in the Governor’s Press Room at the State Capitol. Troop 26, led by Scout leaders Eric Stilwell and Glen Flint, Boy Scouts Jonathan Stilwell, Jeffery Elkins, Cory Flint, Toby Flint, Mark Deakin and Tom Deakin, and Mid-America Council Board of Trustees member Dan Park, senior vice president at Kirkham Michael in Omaha, reported that the Mid-America Council is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. The Mid-America Council’s report noted the Council serves 33,000 youth led by more than 9,200 adult volunteers in 58 counties in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. Scouts in the Mid-America Council raised nearly $3 million from popcorn sales, which was the third largest popcorn sales effort in the United States. In 2005, eight troops of Scouts and adults, totaling 320 people, represented the Mid-America Council at the national Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, where they were addressed by President Bush. This was the largest contingent of Scouts from the Central Region at the Jamboree and the fourth largest group in the country.
Lt. Governor Sheehy joined the delegates for lunch at the Governor’s residence. The Scouts received a tour of the Capitol Building, and were introduced to the members of the Nebraska Legislature during this afternoon’s session.
