Boy Scout Camp Hit by Tornado

Posted on 11 June 2008 by Dan

Tragedy has struck the Little Sioux Scout Ranch in Western Iowa this evening. Reports have started coming in that a Tornado touched down destroying the camp and killing at least four with numerous injuries being treated.

Iowa’s Commissioner of Public Safety, Gene Meyer, told CNN that the tornado touched down around 6:30pm Central Time at the camp, which is about 37 miles north of Omaha, Nebraska. He went on to say “We have four fatalities at this time,” and that “There are plenty of medical people on the ground there.”

Little Sioux Scout Ranch is operated by the Mid-America Council. Scout Executive, Llyod Roitstein reported to CNN that most of the campers are teenagers who were on a training session, which was to end on Saturday. According to the Mid-America Council website, Pahuk Pride, a week long junior training event, was taking place at the camp this week. Approximately 120 people were believed to be at the camp when the disaster struck.

Roitstein told CNN, “The camp is virtually destroyed; there’s nothing left in there.”

Please keep the campers, rescuers, their families, and all others affected in your prayers.

Not a pleasant way to start the summer camping season. This is a tragedy that will affect all of the participants for the rest of their lives.
