The Denver Boy Scouts live the principles of the Scout Oath and Law through community services and “helping other people at all times”. The Scout slogan is to “Do a Good Turn Daily”. As part of Good Turn Week in November, several Cub Scout Packs and Boy Scout Troops from the Gateway District delivered canned goods to the Jeffco Action Center in Lakewood, CO. The Scouts collected food from neighbors in their community. The Jeffco Action Center distributes coats, blankets, toys, and a variety of food to over 200 families daily.
Many of the adult leaders, parents and Scouts stayed for several hours to help sort through the hundreds of grocery bags and put the cans in crates for the center to distribute. It was great to see Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts working side by side as they walked back and forth throughout the halls finding the right bins to put the food until it was all done. The massive amount of food collected will last only 3 to 4 days.
Over 30,000 Scouts throughout the Metro Area provided other Good Turn Week projects during November in their communities including food, clothing and toy drives, clean-up of local schools, serving food to senior citizens and shelters, visiting nursing homes, collecting coats for Denver Homeless, and donating bicycles to the Ronald McDonald House. Over the last year the Denver Boy Scouts contributed over 1 million hours of service throughout their communities.
