“This is Scouting” has been added to the BSA’s on-line Learning Center. “This is Scouting” replaces New Leader Essentials as a required course for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, and Venturing volunteers to earn the “Trained” leader emblem. New Leader Essentials will no longer be taught after April 1, 2009.
While the primary delivery method for “This is Scouting” is on-line, a DVD . No. 36118, will be available after April 1, from BSA Supply Division for areas where internet access is limited or where group presentation is desired.
All Scouters are encouraged to create a MyScouting account and access this training through the MyScouting portal, as credit for this training will be recorded on their ScoutNET record upon completion.
Update: When the announcement was originally made on Scouting.org it stated that New Leaders Essential would no longer be taught after April 1st. This reference has been removed from the majority of Council announcements. Please check with your local Council to determine if New Leader Essentials is still being taught.

Last I heard from our Council (049) is that we will be offering NLE classes till the end of the year along side This is Scouting, but obviously that does not coincide with the Scoutingnews.org memo. I Just want to confirm with you about NLE…the memo say that it replaced NLE and that NLE will no longer be taught after April 1st.
Will NLE no longer be valid after April 1st according to National? Us trainers were told that both will be offered and that NLE is still good till the end of this year, after which This is Scouting will be the only acceptable training.

Have a question that has come up within our Council…. is the Intro to Pack Specifics the same as This is Scouting…. had one person call national and received a yes answer and another person call and received a no answer… Can you help…

@Dianna – I am not an expert on Cub Scout training. Maybe someone who is will chime in. I’m thinking the confusion may lie within the name of “Intro to Pack Specifics”, I can’t find that as an actual course.
The National Website has a good overview of the Cub Scout Training progression, maybe you can see if the “Into to Pack Specifics” is mentioned under a different name?
