According to information coming out on Twitter from @BoyScouts and @ScoutExecutive, the new National High Adventure Base will be called the Bechtel Family National Scouting Center. Stephen D. Bechtel, Jr. has made a $50 million contribution to the project.
The Betchel family runs the Bechtel Corporation which is a worldwide engineering, construction, and project management company. The international company is well known for completing major projects, such as the Hoover Dam, Honk Kong International Airport, and the Big Dig.
The family also has a strong Scouting tradition. Stephen D. Bechtel, Jr became an Eagle Scout in 1940, and has been awarded the Silver Buffalo Award and the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award. Stephen’s uncle, Kenneth Bechtel served as National President of the Boy Scouts of America from 1956-1959.

For a short while I worked at Bechtel. I was never more proud to work for a company. They had quality men and women in difficult locations working at difficult, and occasionally, dangerous tasks. Never were they unsupported by headquarters. From the Global units to the geographic divisions employees were held to timelines and budget and success. Pride in work was and is a key component in Bechtel projects. I believe that their support of the Boy Scouts and the new West Virginia high adventure camp will be nothing short of spectacular and you can bet it will be built right.
