Here is a snapshot of January 2010 here at Scouting News.
First, I’d like to thank our September Sponsor: BoyScoutStore.com
Boy Scout Store is an independent website, not affilated with the BSA, Girl Scouts of the USA, or the World Scouting Movement, and has provided Scouting collectibles since 1996. They have a wide selection of merchandise including: Merit Badges, Merit Badge Books, Council Shoulder Patches, Order of the Arrow Flaps, Spoof Patches, Books and Handbooks, Eagle Scout, Cub Scout items, National Jamboree, World Jamboree, Scouting Coins and much more. If you haven’t checked them out yet, I’d encourage you to see what they have today! If you have visited their store, check back often for new items.
Top Stories This Month
This list is based on traffic as reported by Google Analytics. I suppose it is not a true image of the “top stories” since it gives preference to stories that have been online longer, however it is a nice snapshot.
1. New Merit Badges for 2009 & 2010
Published August 13, 2009
Introduced the new merit badges coming out in 2009 and 2010 that have been announced. They include: Robotics, GPS/GIS, Scouting Heritage, and Scuba. Most of the folks who commented were excited about all of these new additions, especially Scuba. A few folks were curious about which badges they would replace, but thus far I have not heard of any Merit Badges getting the cut.
2. 2010 Dremel Pinewood Derby Days Program at Lowes
Published January 6, 2010
Once again for 2010, Dremel Power Tools teamed up with Lowe’s Home Improvement Stores to present Dremel Pinewood Derby Days. Just like in 2009, the results seem to be less than stellar based off of a couple of comments. If you plan to go check out one of the presentations be sure to call ahead and verify they will be there, you may try asking about what the presentation entails as well!
3. Sneak Peak at the BSA Rose Bowl Parade Float
Published October 25, 2009
The Boy Scouts of America’s 100th anniversary float in the 2010 Tournament of Roses proved to be a big hit with volunteers across the country. In October we provided a sneak peak of the float, and of course we followed up with another post after the float debuted in the parade.
4. 2010 Centennial Rank Advancement Badges
Published January 27, 2010

Random Thoughts about January!
January was still a tad rough as I transitioned from life in Iraq to life in the states. I hope to get to work on updating Scouting News, and ensuring posts are more regular. Once again, thanks for all the support over the last year.
February will bring us the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, to celebrate we will be having a few contests here on Scouting News. Make sure you check back frequently to enter to win one of many great prizes, I plan on having at least one contest a week!
