Judge David Harper Distingushed Citizen Award Dinner

Posted on 20 September 2010 by Press Release

Boy Scouts of America’s (BSA) Sailfish District will honor the community contributions of Martin County business leaders at the Judge David Harper Distinguished Citizen Award Dinner, a dinner benefit which has been renamed this year to honor the Judge’s impressive leadership in the judicial system and community service. Co-chaired by Arthur Brandt and Lee Feinberg of the Law Offices of Brandt & Feinberg, the event is set for Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 6 p.m. at the Marriott Hotel, Hutchinson Island with proceeds to benefit the newly created Judge David Harper Scholarship Fund and BSA Martin County area scout programs which serve more than 2,200 youth. Nominations for recipients of the inaugural Judge David Harper Distinguished Citizen Award are being accepted until October 1, 2010.

The BSA Distinguished Citizen Award, which is considered the highest honor presented by the BSA, is given to individuals who exemplify exceptional leadership and service within the community. Past Florida recipients of the Boy Scouts of America’s Distinguished Citizen Award include Sheriff Robert Crowder; Nathaniel Reed, Jules “Toots” Armellini; Richmond “Dick” Harmon, U.S. Congressman Clay Shaw; Dr. Edward Eissey, former president of Palm Beach Community College; Golf Legend Jack Nicklaus; legendary Sportscaster Curt Gowdy and City of Boca Raton Councilman Peter Baronoff.

“Recognizing Judge David Harper in this way truly brings the BSA’s nationally recognized honor home to our community in a most fitting way,” noted Event Co-Chair Arthur Brandt who along with firm partner Lee Feinberg and BSA Sailfish District Executive Dennis Armstrong conceived the award dedication for Judge Harper. “It not only celebrates the lifetime ethics and commitment of an outstanding community leader and judicial system role model Judge David Harper, but also elevates our community’s interest in raising the bar for recipients of his namesake award this year and beyond.”

BSA Sailfish District Executive Dennis Armstrong agrees. “This was a perfect approach to our 2010 Distinguished Citizen Award plans. Judge David Harper was respected by so many, well beyond his legal circles, who serves as an exemplary role model for our youth and the greater community-at-large.”

Event Co-Chair Lee Feinberg encourages the community to submit nominations for recipients of the inaugural Judge David Harper Distinguished Citizen Award as soon as possible; deadline for nomination submissions is October 1, 2010. Contact Dennis Armstrong at dennis.armstrong@scouting.org or (561) 694-8585 to obtain and submit nominations forms. Nominees must be a year ‘round resident of Martin County for at least five years.

Event Committee members include Committee Chair Marsha Ewing, Martin County Clerk of Courts; Dennis Armstrong, Sailfish District Executive Gulf Stream Council; Linda Braswell, Braswell Bail Bonds; Robert Crowder, Martin County Sheriff; Nita Denton, Asst. State Attorney; Kate Harper, Harper Family; Virginia Hill, Sailfish District Finance Chair; Jon A. Kaye, Kaye Communications, Inc.; and Linda Weiksnar, Cary Buchanan Law Firm.

The BSA Gulf Stream Council, which includes the Sailfish District of the Boy Scouts of America, is the area’s largest youth-serving organization serving youth in eight public school districts in southeast Florida and seven counties. The council has more than 34,000 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, Explorers and Learning For Life members in more than 400 packs, troops, posts and groups served by 3,600 volunteer leaders. Guided and governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and Advisory Board, it is composed of more than 150 leading business, educational, religious and professional leaders.
