Recipients of Scouting’s highest honors now can have something extra to show for their hard work and accomplishment: a more affordable college education.

The University of Evansville has teamed up with America’s Scouting organizations to create the UE Scouting Scholarship – a $55,000, four-year award for recipients of the Scouting’s highest honors. The award, which will first be administered to incoming freshmen in the 2009-10 academic year, is available to Boy Scouts who have earned the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout Award, Sea Scouts who have earned the Sea Scouting Quartermaster Award, or Venturers who have earned the Venturing Silver Award; and to Girl Scouts who have received the Girls Scouts of the USA Gold Award.

Candidates also must visit the UE campus before April 18, 2009.

“We’re extremely excited about this partnership with the Boy Scouts of America and Girl Scouts of the USA,” said Keith Gehlhausen, Central Region Venturing Chair and Director of Human Resources at UE. “The young men and women who earn these organizations’ highest honors become the type of college students who succeed at the University of Evansville – they already have demonstrated the values, the work ethic, and the commitment to learning that embody the University of Evansville’s mission.”

These young men and women, who already have distinguished themselves through service to their communities, will have the opportunity at UE to continue the service they began as Scouts. The University of Evansville’s commitment to service encourages every student to make a difference in their community, beginning with a Freshman Service Project the first week of classes.

The $55,000 scholarship breaks down to $13,750 each year.

The University of Evansville is a private, United Methodist Church-related, comprehensive university that is a member of the Associated New American Colleges. Its core purpose is to provide life-transforming educational experiences that prepare students to engage the world as informed, ethical, and productive citizens.
