Scout units often assist first responders during large scale drills; however this is the first article I’ve seen where Boy Scouts helped a hospital staff prepare for the opening of a hospital.
The Cumberland Times reported on Boy Scouts participating as patients during the dry run at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
When a hospital opens, there is little room for error. So when the time came to test the services at Cumberland’s new health care facility, hospital officials thought it would be beneficial to have the assistance of some of the nation’s most trusted community service members — the Boy Scouts of America.
On Saturday, more than 100 Boy Scouts and troop leaders from the local Potomac Council and Baltimore Area Council Boy Scouts of America participated in a scheduled mock training day for the new Western Maryland Regional Medical Center scheduled to open Saturday at 6 a.m.

Four Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 382 in Arnold posted the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance at the September 16, 2009, Board of Education meeting, starting a new tradition in which Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops will help open Board meetings.
“It is a great privilege for our Board to be able to have local Scouts lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance,” Board President Ned Carey said.
“Their presence not only instills a great source of pride, but it reminds us that we do what we do because of them and all of the other children in our county. We are very pleased not only to host them for this endeavor, but to allow them to see the Board in action and to better understand the educational process as they work toward becoming leaders of our community.”
Troops will be invited to perform the duties at each evening Board meeting throughout the school year. Troops interested in posting the colors and leading the Pledge should contact the Public Information Office for more information.
In addition to its daytime meetings on the first Wednesday of each month, the Board meets at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month in the Board Room at the Parham Building, 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis.
