Lloyd Outlasts Rain To Tie With Season Best Finish

Posted on 14 August 2011 by Press Release

Alex Lloyd outlasted tough track conditions and much on-track contact today as he drove the #19 Boy Scouts of America car to a 13th place finish at Sunday’s MoveThatBlock.com Indy 225. Even with rain dropping constantly throughout the race to make the track slick, and six caution periods, Lloyd was able to finish in a position that ties with his season best finish from Iowa.

During Saturday’s practice session, both Dale Coyne Racing drivers held constant top-ten positions. Lloyd ran as high as 4th, while rookie James Jakes, driver of the #18 Acorn Stairlifts car, was running as high as 3rd position during the session. However, qualifying results left Lloyd starting the race in 14th and Jakes starting 20th.

Due to weather conditions, Sunday’s race at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway started early in hopes of avoiding the forecasted rain. After two early caution periods as a result of contact between cars, officials brought out the yellow caution flag for moisture on the 75th lap. The field ran under yellow for 32 laps before the green flag was waved again. Following two more cautions due to contact, the track went yellow once more for moisture on lap 206, before a bizarre ending with a red flag on lap 219 and scoring reverting back to lap 215 before the last incident which relegated Lloyd from 10th back to his final 13th placing. Neither Lloyd nor rookie James Jakes got caught up in any of the contact.

“It was great to be back on the track,” said Lloyd. “The race definitely gave the fans a good show, and I have to thank my spotter for all the help on the restarts because we almost got caught up in all that action! We had a very good car this weekend, and it’s a shame that we couldn’t race the full 225 laps and finish under green, but again, glad I was able to represent the Boy Scouts of America in the #19 car and finish out the race.”

Jakes had one of his most promising weekends of his rookie season with the IZOD IndyCar Series. After a great weekend of practice, his race ended early on lap 176 as the #18 car suffered its first gearbox failure in three years. Jakes was running 14th when he had to come in, and ultimately would be classified 18th out of the 27 car field.

“Even though the #18 Acorn Stairlifts car didn’t finish today, it was a very positive weekend for us,” Jakes said. “We had a great pace during the race. I’m very confident we would have finished in the top-ten if we could have run the whole time. Thanks to all the guys on the team for all of their hard work… You’re going to see it pay off at Infineon!”

Join us in two weeks as the IZOD IndyCar Series heads next to Infineon Raceway for the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma. The race will air live on VERSUS on Sunday, August 28 at 4PM ET.
