Scouting out Fire Hydrants

Posted on 30 October 2009 by Dan

Eagle ScoutThe Daily Item features an article about an Eagle Scout whose project was scouting out fire hydrants for the city.

He’s made it his business to scout out the hydrants in town so emergency responders can know the exact longitude and latitude for each of the hydrants.

Eagle Scout James Duffy, who is a member of Swampscott Troop 53, approached Fire Chief Michael Champion last summer regarding doing his Eagle Scout volunteer project on fire hydrants.

“Since we have a computer file on the hydrant location, his job was to redo it and verify all the hydrant information,” Champion said. “Over the years hydrants were added or removed to accommodate building and water supply.”

Duffy, who is a senior at Swampscott High School, said he joined the boy scouts seven years ago and he has been working on his Eagle Scout project for more than a year.

“I knew I wanted to do something with the fire department and fire hydrants,” Duffy said. “I figured it might be a good idea to log all the hydrants in town. There are 530 hydrants.”

This would make a fun project to add to the Cache to Eagle program!
